MacKenzie Scott Presents $12 Million Gift to Howard's College of Medicine

Dear Howard University Community,

It is with immense pleasure that I share news about an extraordinary $12 million gift to the Howard University College of Medicine from philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott.

This generous donation – part of $2.2 billion in grants Ms. Scott has given this year to hundreds of organizations across the nation – is unrestricted in nature, providing our College of Medicine the autonomy to determine how to make the greatest impact with these added resources. Andrea A. Hayes Dixon, M.D., dean of the College of Medicine, has shared that Ms. Scott’s gift will be used to establish an innovations center in collaboration with our College of Engineering and Architecture, offering medical and engineering students opportunities to learn about advanced medical technology and how to improve patient care.

Ms. Scott is no stranger to Howard University. In 2020, she gave $40 million – the largest gift from a single donor – to Howard University, the alma mater of her former Princeton University professor, renowned author Toni Morrison. Ms. Scott believes in Howard University, our demonstrated record of achievement and advocacy, and our potential to continue producing students prepared to effect change here in the U.S. and around the globe. For that, I am extremely grateful.

Because of Ms. Scott’s support, our students will receive further training that will make them leaders in medical technology and innovation, preparing them to play a critical role in transforming healthcare. It is my hope that this gift further solidifies our College of Medicine as a world-class institution that attracts and retains future leaders in the field of medicine, producing compassionate and culturally competent healthcare professionals who are deeply committed to providing care that will improve outcomes for all.

As many of us prepare to enjoy this holiday season, may we all be inspired by Ms. Scott’s awesome display of generosity and her unwavering faith in what makes Howard University so special.
