Observing Independence Day 2024

Dear Howard University Community,

Independence Day is a time for contemplation on the values that define our nation—freedom, equality, and justice. These principles resonate deeply with the mission of Howard University, a beacon of academic excellence and social justice since its founding.

Our nation's journey has been marked by tremendous achievements and equally profound challenges. As members of the Howard University family, we are acutely aware of the complexities and contradictions of American history. Founded in the aftermath of the Civil War, Howard was chartered with the purpose of providing educational opportunities to all who had been systematically denied them, and particularly those newly freed African Americans. This institution has stood as a testament to resilience and excellence, providing a world-class education and advocating for social justice and equality.

As we honor the struggles and triumphs of our forebears, we are reminded that the pursuit of equality and justice remains ongoing. I encourage each of us to reflect on our role in continuing this legacy. Our commitment to academic excellence, service, and leadership is more critical than ever. As we look to the future, let us reaffirm our dedication to fostering a community that upholds the values of diversity, inclusion, and equity. It is through our collective efforts that we can ensure the promise of America is realized for all.

At Howard University, we are proud to be at the forefront of this movement. Through our teaching, research, and community engagement efforts, we are working to dismantle systemic barriers to opportunity and thereby create a more just and equitable society. Whether through our groundbreaking research on social issues, our advocacy for marginalized communities, or our commitment to diversity and inclusion, we are making a difference in the world every day.

Independence Day is not just a celebration of our nation's history but a reminder of the ongoing journey toward a more perfect union. At Howard University, we understand that education is a powerful tool in shaping that journey. Our commitment to cultivating leaders who champion these ideals is unwavering. We are reminded of the countless Howard alumni who have made significant contributions to civil rights, public service, and global leadership. Their achievements are a testament to the enduring impact of our University on the broader quest for equality and justice.
