Commemorating Veterans Day 2024

Dear Howard University Community,

On this Veterans Day, I extend my deepest respect and gratitude to the brave individuals who have served, and continue to serve, in the United States Armed Forces. Today reminds us of their unwavering commitment to our country’s safety and ideals.

For me, Veterans Day is a profoundly special occasion. As the child of a veteran, I was raised in a family where the values of duty, integrity, and sacrifice were ever-present. I had a front-row seat to the extraordinary lives of servicemembers – people who showed me from an early age what it means to dedicate oneself to something larger than any individual ambition. I have always admired their courage, humility, and commitment – qualities I aspire toward daily in my own life and leadership.

At Howard University, we are proud to count among us many veterans – students, faculty, staff, and alumni – who bring a spirit of honor and truth to our community.

Their presence strengthens us and encourages us to consider how we, too, can make meaningful contributions to our communities and country. Howard has also long partnered with the armed forces, from supporting veterans and military families through our ROTC program, and research collaboration with the Department of Defense, to initiatives for veterans' educational access. These are just a few of our efforts to support those who have given so much to our nation.

To our veterans, we thank you. May we carry forward your example of selfless service and dedication by working together to advance justice, equity, and opportunity for all.

Committed to Truth and Service,

Ben Vinson III, Ph.D.
