Honoring Women’s History Month 2024

Dear Howard University Community,

Today is International Women's Day, and as we commemorate Women's History Month, we are reminded once more of the profound impact of women and how they shape our world. From trailblazers who fought tirelessly for women's rights and gender equality, to pioneers in STEM education, business, sports, and the arts, women have blazed their own paths in every aspect of all human endeavors.

At Howard University, we take great pride in our rich legacy of empowering women and nurturing leaders who defy the odds, break barriers, and inspire change. From our distinguished alumnae across history, to our current faculty, staff, and students who are making their mark across this country and our globe, women – specifically Black women – are at the forefront of Howard’s excellence.

As an institution dedicated to fostering academic excellence, social justice, and leadership, we remain steadfast in our commitment to nurturing the next generation of female leaders. Through our diverse array of programs, initiatives, and resources, we strive to empower women to realize their full potential and make a meaningful impact in their respective fields.

This month is also an occasion to amplify the voices of women who may have been overlooked or marginalized. It is a call to action for inclusivity and equity. We must recognize and address the intersectionality of gender and race with other aspects of identity, ensuring that the struggles and triumphs of all women are acknowledged and celebrated.

This Women's History Month, let us celebrate the achievements of women past and present, while also acknowledging the work that still lies ahead in the ongoing fight for gender equality. Let us honor the countless women whose names may not appear in history books but whose contributions are invaluable to their communities and to our society at-large. Let us uplift and amplify the voices of women of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities, recognizing that true progress is only possible when all women are included and empowered.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to the women of Howard University for their unwavering commitment to excellence and their tireless efforts to uplift and empower others. Your contributions are truly invaluable, and I am honored to serve as your president.

Committed to Truth and Service,

Ben Vinson III, Ph.D.
