Independence Day 2021

Dear Howard University Community,

The founding of the United States on July 4, 1776 was predicated on a vision of what was to come rather than an acknowledgement of what already existed. The Declaration of Independence did not instantaneously create a new nation, but rather an intent to found one and the principles upon which it would be built. There was still a war to be fought, a constitution to be drafted and a government to be created before America would truly take shape. But still, the date we recognize as the beginning coincided with the dream of what could be.

As we pause to commemorate Independence Day this year, we should take the opportunity to reflect on the national values enshrined in that all-important founding document – representation, liberty, equality, justice – and rededicate ourselves to their pursuit. And just as importantly, we should recognize that the America envisioned by the signers of the declaration has yet to come to fruition. It is still a dream, albeit one that I believe is coming closer and closer to our grasp.

When we profess a love of America, we should do so with the intention of perfecting our country rather than falsely or prematurely declaring it to currently be and always have been perfect. The purest expression of patriotism should always come by way of truth and service. We must be honest about our country’s flaws and imperfections and put in the work to help America realize the best version of itself.

The signers of the Declaration of Independence knew they were not bringing into existence a fully formed nation. They established the parameters of what America could become and entrusted in us the responsibility of overseeing its constant and continuous improvement. We must take up that mantle so that the country we leave for the next generation will be a better version than the one we inherited.

As a reminder, in observance of Independence Day, the University will be closed on Monday, July 5 and will reopen on Tuesday, July 6, 2021.

Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable holiday!
