Kennedy Chastang Named 2023 Goldwater Scholar
Dear Howard University Community,
It is with great pride that I announce Kennedy Chastang was named a 2023 Goldwater Scholar. The Goldwater Scholarship Program is the preeminent undergraduate award in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Ms. Chastang is one of only 413 awardees selected from an estimated pool of over 5,000 applicants.
Ms. Chastang is a junior honors chemistry major and Spanish minor. In the future, she intends to become a medical doctor in infectious diseases and acquire a doctorate in organic chemistry. The Detroit native plans to have a multifaceted career, conducting research in drug delivery while practicing medicine in low resource settings, and she hopes to transition her research towards novel approaches to antimalarial drug delivery.
A scholar-researcher, Ms. Chastang has participated in several research projects across the world throughout her undergraduate career, spanning from Utah to Malawi. This summer, she will be studying chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico.
On Howard’s campus, Ms. Chastang is a member of the Karsh STEM Scholar Cohort 4, the Howard Model United Nations team, and the Howard University Community Choir, and she is helping develop Howard’s first International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGem) team as treasurer.
This announcement is another testament of Howard’s commitment to identifying global prestigious opportunities and encouraging independent inquiry and scholarship through experiential learning and leadership development.
I appreciate all the Office of Undergraduate Studies' Academic Center of Excellence (Scholars Program) team does to support our students with attaining national and international merit awards and prestigious scholarships.
Please join me in congratulating Ms. Chastang on her outstanding accomplishment.
Excellence in Truth and Service,
