Letter from the President - Mental Health Day

Dear Howard University Community,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits as we navigate the challenges and opportunities of the academic year. As we rapidly approach the midpoint of the semester, it is crucial that we take a moment to reflect on our well-being and prioritize mental health as an integral part of our overall success.

It is with great consideration and empathy for the well-being of our students, faculty, and staff that I am pleased to announce a University-wide mental health day on tomorrow, Friday, February 2, 2024. All classes and University operations will be suspended to provide our community with the opportunity to rest, recharge, and engage in activities that contribute to their mental and emotional wellness.

The decision to implement these mental health days stems from our commitment to fostering a culture of holistic well-being on our campus. Here at Howard, we not only encourage academic excellence, but we also support the welfare of our entire community. Recognizing the increasing challenges and pressures that come with the demands of academic life, we believe that taking a day off to focus on mental health is a crucial step towards promoting a culture of self-care and mindfulness.

This mental health day is not just a day off from our regular activities; it is a deliberate effort to destigmatize conversations surrounding mental health and encourage open dialogue within our community. Mental health is a vital component of overall wellness, and we must treat it with the same importance as physical health.

I urge each of you to take the time to engage in activities that promote relaxation, rejuvenation. Prioritize whatever brings you joy and peace of mind.

Additionally, I want to remind everyone that support resources will still be available throughout the day. Our counseling services will remain accessible for those who may need additional support or guidance. I encourage anyone in need of assistance to reach out and utilize these resources without hesitation.

Let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting one another in our journey toward mental wellness. Let us foster a campus culture where seeking help is not only encouraged but celebrated as a courageous step toward self-improvement. Thank you for your commitment to creating a healthy and supportive community at Howard University.

Committed to Truth and Service,

Ben Vinson III, Ph.D.
