Observing Indigenous Peoples Day
Dear Howard University Community,
As we observe this year’s Indigenous Peoples Day, I extend heartfelt wishes to all who celebrate and reflect upon this important occasion. Today, we honor the vibrant cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples and reaffirm our collective commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society.
Howard University has long stood as a champion of education, empowerment, and advocacy for historically underrepresented groups. While our mission is deeply rooted in the African American experience, it is critical to acknowledge and celebrate the intersections between our community and other historically marginalized groups, such as Indigenous peoples. The collective struggle for dignity, sovereignty, and justice is one we share.
From centuries of wisdom in environmental stewardship to the rich storytelling traditions that continue to inspire, Indigenous cultures have profoundly shaped our nation. Their contributions to our society — through the arts, sciences, agriculture, and more — are indispensable. By fostering dialogue and learning from their experiences, we become better equipped to build a more just and inclusive future for all.
This day, which also serves as a Mental Health Day at Howard University, offers us a chance to pause, reflect, and recharge. Let it be a reminder of the importance of mental well-being, as well as the power of introspection. By creating space for repose and renewal, we continue our commitment to fostering a healthy and supportive environment for all.
I encourage each of you to take this time not only to reflect on the legacy of Indigenous peoples, but also to prioritize your own mental health. Rest, reflect, and rejuvenate in ways that empower you to continue your journey of growth and learning. Thank you for your ongoing dedication to these values, and I hope this day provides you with the space for meaningful contemplation and personal care.
Committed to Truth and Service,
Ben Vinson III, Ph.D.
