Response to Morgan State University Incident
Dear Howard University Community,
As we and other institutions of higher education around the country prepare to celebrate the beauty of homecoming season on our campuses, I ask that you join me in extending heartfelt prayers to the Morgan State University community.
Last night’s news of the shooting following the coronation of Miss and Mr. Morgan State University is an unfortunate reminder of the senseless gun violence that is occurring too frequently in our country today. I am grateful that this incident did not result in fatalities, but the trauma related to incidents like this will undoubtedly leave emotional wounds that will linger for quite some time.
We stand with Morgan State University during this time, and I join my fellow president David Wilson, EdD in condemning this heinous act of violence. As Dr. Wilson stated last night, Morgan State will not be deterred by this incident, but it will continue its momentum toward being the world-class university its students and surrounding communities need and deserve.
Being on a college campus should be a joyful and optimistic experience, especially during homecoming season. We remain committed to working in partnership with our campus community, external partners and neighbors to ensure that our campus is safe, and that it is a nurturing haven for our students to thrive. Please note that University Counseling Services (UCS) are available for all students. Students may call 202-806-6870 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. After hours and weekend support is available by calling our crisis line at 202-345-6709. For Howard University employees, support is available through the Employee Assistance Program.
Committed to Truth and Service,
Ben Vinson III, PhD
President
