Thank you, Howard Community 🎓

Dear Howard University Community,

I want to take a moment to thank you again for your support in making this year’s graduation exercises, especially the 155th Commencement Convocation, a resounding success.

Our University is historic because of our ability to create innovative solutions when things appear dire. That is why, with thunderstorms in today’s forecast, I knew with certainty that we would be able to relocate Commencement Convocation into Capital One Arena while still providing our graduates the sendoff they so richly deserve. The reality of today’s ceremonies exceeded even my biggest dreams, and I am grateful to this community for trusting in our vision. Capital One Arena forever has a Bison Blue stamp now, and it is because of all of you.

Thank you again to Ted Leonsis and Monumental Sports and Entertainment for granting us your space on such short notice. Thank you to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and the White House for your flexibility and partnership in joining us as this year's commencement orator. Thank you to the phenomenal Howard staff, esteemed faculty, administration, and volunteers who worked tirelessly these past few days to learn a new venue while maintaining the spirit of what makes these days special. And to the graduates, I especially want to extend my thanks to you for your understanding and grace as we navigated this situation. I sincerely hope our efforts made clear just how deeply proud this community — this family — is of each and every one of you.

Congratulations again to the graduates and their families on this incredible milestone. I said this morning that an even brighter future lies ahead for our people and our University because of you all in this year’s graduating class, and I believe it wholeheartedly. I am excited to watch you all change the world for the better as alumni of Alma Mater. H-U!
