Dear Howard University Community,
 
Throughout the difficult days of the coronavirus pandemic, I have taken great pride in how we have cared for each other as a Howard University community. This includes doing all we could to preserve our workforce even as we simultaneously provided $14 million in additional financial aid to our students. This reflects the tremendous value placed on our employees, and our dedication to demonstrating our commitment to all those who work to ensure our institution continues to fulfill its mission and responsibilities.

It is altogether fitting that, this year, we should commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day the same week we celebrate the historic inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the first Black person and the first woman ever to become vice president of the United States.

I would like to extend my most enthusiastic greetings to the Class of 2021 and the Class of 2020 as well as to everyone who plays such a critical role in the extended Howard community – students and alumni, faculty and staff, the Board of Trustees, friends and family. Welcome to our University’s 153rd Commencement Convocation. While I wish we could all celebrate in-person today, it is still a blessing that we can come together in some fashion.
