Presidential Statements 2022-2023

Please join me in giving a hearty congratulations to our Howard Bison men’s basketball team on completing a terrific season and earning its way into this year’s NCAA Division I basketball tournament.

As we commemorate this year’s Women’s History Month, I am especially proud of the recent accomplishments by some of our very own.

It is imperative moving forward that we take a fuller stand and be bold that Black history is American history, too, and I am grateful that Howard University lives at the forefront of that movement.

I am proud to announce the launch of a unique new partnership between Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

As we prepare for the annual observance of Presidents Day, it is not lost on me that the holiday sometimes underscores an understandably fraught relationship with our community and other communities of color.

Today we announce the appointment of Phylicia Rashad, Dean of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, as the inaugural holder of the Toni Morrison Endowed Chair in Arts and Humanities.

Contemporary is simply defined as current or modern, and so that leaves me to question what the opposite of a contemporary education might be. Something outmoded and obsolete? As a practicing surgeon, I am trying to imagine the logic behind suggesting we operate on patients in the same way we did when the original Freedman’s Hospital opened, despite the advancements in medical technology in the 161 years since.

Yesterday, yet another police department released yet another heartbreaking video of a life senselessly taken by its law enforcement, this time in the city of Memphis, Tennessee.

In his acclaimed “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. cautioned us all: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

The COVID-19 pandemic helped us recognize just how small the world has truly become and how interconnected we all are. What happens on one side of the world affects all of us. The greatest challenges we face – from climate change to economic insecurity to the threat of another deadly disease outbreak – must be addressed and solved collectively and with a global mindset.
