Presidential Statements 2022-2023

Due to inclement weather conditions, and with concurrence from the White House and United States Secret Service, I have decided to relocate this Saturday’s 155th Commencement Convocation to Capital One Arena, located in downtown Washington, D.C.

Once again, let us take this moment at the start of this year’s National Nurses Week to appreciate our nurses, a foundational pillar of our society.

The Honorable Joseph R. Biden, Jr., 46th president of the United States, will address the Class of 2023 as the commencement orator during Howard University’s 155th Commencement Convocation on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Howard University will also confer upon President Biden the honorary Doctor of Letters.

I am pleased to announce that the University will confer six honorary doctorate degrees during the 155th Commencement Convocation. The ceremony will take place on the main campus of Howard University’s Upper Quadrangle at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

Service remains an indelible part of our University’s identity. We have taken our commitments to both truth and service with the utmost sincerity, and I suspect that to be at least a small reason for our continued success.

Our community celebrates the life and mourns the passing of the legendary entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte. Mr. Belafonte died on Tuesday from congestive heart failure at age 96.

This week we announced a series of major milestones and achievements under our Howard Forward 2024 strategic plan, highlighting our beloved University's ongoing commitment to academic excellence, innovation, community service, efficiency, and financial sustainability.

The Goldwater Scholarship Program is the preeminent undergraduate award in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Ms. Chastang is one of only 413 awardees selected from an estimated pool of over 5,000 applicants.

Even as we celebrate another milestone year for the University, our work as change agents remains vital to our future -- both as an institution and as a people.

Yolanda Pierce, PhD, dean of the Howard University School of Divinity, will be departing our beloved institution at the end of this semester. Effective July 1, Dean Pierce will officially be the next dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Divinity.
